Module 1 - Planetary Gear Sets Operation (Page 5 of 5)

Reverse 1 - Reduction reverse (very high torque, very low speed)

Every vehicle requires a reverse gear. Reverse gear is only useful when it is a reduction gear. That is, high torque and low speed.

Sun gear – INPUT from the engine through the torque converter
Ring gear – OUTPUT to the rear wheels
Carrier – HELD by the transmission

RULE: Whenever the carrier is held, the resulting gear is ALWAYS a reverse gear.

RULE: Whenever the sun gear is the input gear, the resulting gear is ALWAYS a reduction gear.

Reverse 2 - Overdrive revere (low torque, high speed) - useless gear

This is a useless gear. You will never need to have an overdrive reverse gear. In this case, a large gear (the ring gear) is turning a small gear (the sun gear). The resulting gear is overdrive. Because the planet carrier is being held, the resulting gear is also reverse direction.

Sun gear – OUTPUT to rear wheels
Ring gear – INPUT from the engine
Carrier – HELD by the transmission

RULE: Whenever the carrier is held, the resulting gear is ALWAYS a reverse gear.
